What is PTA

Purified terephthalic acid (PTA) is the preferred feedstock used in the manufacture of polyester fiber, PET, film, and engineering resins. PTA is produced from paraxylene (PX), which is a downstream derivative in the petrochemical chain.

PTA is a key raw material component in the polyester value chain, mainly used for:

(1) The Polyester Industry to produce fibers and yarns, which later will be used for textile products, and for

(2) The PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) Industry to produce bottles, microwave utensils, x-ray and photographic film, containers, and certain products used in the automobile industry, such as car parts and roof linings and hygiene industries, such as diapers and sanitary napkins.

The following diagram illustrates where PTA and its principal feedstock, paraxylene, fit in the polyester production chain.

Production Process

Our PTA plant has two main stage of process in producing PTA:

(1) Oxidation – Forming Crude Terephthalic Acid (“CTA”) from Paraxylene (“PX”)

(2) Purification – Purifying Crude Terephthalic Acid (“CTA”) into Purified Terephthalic Acid (“PTA”)
